Trying AG!

Trying AG!

(I am not a cyclops, I really do have two eyes!)

This is a chocolate flavored powder that they call “A Rainbow of Nutrition”. The amount of fluid is very small… about 6 ounces. I mixed mine in the Blender Bottle (even though I wish AG would send me one of their cool bottles with their logo on it…) w/some unsweetened almond milk. It tastes like a healthy chocolate milk. With chocolate, you can’t go wrong! It had a few sips with particles (despite mixing well), that tasted like tiny bits of oatmeal or grain. I really like this! It did not taste too wheat-grassy. Will have to read up on how it differs from the regular Chocolate SuperFood (nutrition-wise).

Have a few more samples to try yet! Seems everyone is jumping on the AG bandwagon lately.

Kashi Coupons

I also got a boat-load of Kashi coupons in the mail! Although I already used most of these on my last shopping trip (it’s how I got a free box of Vive!), there are a few that I probably won’t be using and would love to pass them onto anyone who is interested and would use them.

Six (6) $2.00 Off On Any One Kashi Frozen Entree or Bake Product (expires: 9/1/09)
Five (5) $1.50 Off On Any One Kashi Frozen Bread Pocket Product (expires: 9/1/09)
One (1) $3.00 Off On Any One Kashi Frozen Pizza Product (expires: 9/1/09)

Total of $22.50 Savings!

Not too shabby. Just email me your addy and I’ll drop them in the post. I don’t want to split these up, so whomever is the first person to email me will get all of them.

Have a great Friday!

Melamine “Dinnerware” for Work & Barney Butter Review!

Melamine Plates From Target

Melamine Plates From Target

Since I go into the office 4 days a week, and especially since I’m one of those 5-meals-a-day people, that means I eat 16 “meals” at my desk a week! (The word meals is used lightly, because a lot of them are more or less snacks.)

My desk drawer is stocked with paper plates, napkins & utensils but I hate using a paper plate just to make up some cheese & crackers. Seems so wasteful doesn’t it? Especially when for around a buck or two you can pick up a sweet melamine plate! Target has a decent selection of these all from $1-$5 each. They are lightweight and perfect for keeping at the office. Only downfall is that they are not microwaveable. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

All this talk about eating at the desk reminds me of this WebMD article.

“The desk, in terms of bacteria, is 400 times more dirty than your toilet,” says Charles Gerba, PhD, a professor of environmental microbiology at the University of Arizona in Tucson. “People turn their desks into bacteria cafeterias because they eat at them, but they never clean them. The phone is the dirtiest, the desktop is next, and the mouse and the computer follow.”

Which I think is fine, as long as you understand that and CLEAN it often. I keep a container of disinfecting wipes to clean everything down.

Getting OUT for lunch is much better, and for lunch I usually go outside or the cafeteria at the least and read a book and try to relax and enjoy my food. However, for the other meals/snacks… I can’t exactly take my 9:30am cheese & crackers break and go sit outside and eat while my co-workers are all working hard.

Who else eats at their desk and can relate?

Onto the food! Today’s eats:

(Not shown: Afternoon Snack – Green Smoothie, Dinner – Grilled Chicken Wings & Back to Nature Macaroni)

These black bean burgers rock. They are made loosely from Eating Bird Food’s recipe found here. I make up batches and freeze them individually wrapped. Just thaw in the fridge a few hours (or toss in your lunch cooler) and microwave. They are delicious in wraps, pitas or on a bun either with traditional burger toppings, or with guacamole, hummus or grilled onions!

The kind folks at Barney Butter were nice enough to send me a few samples!

I tried one packet squeezed over my banana for lunch. The color was different from the almond butters I’m use to (more orangey), and it was a smoother consistency…creamier. The taste was AMAZING. It was the stick-to-your-mouth kind of goodness that I was craving.

Here are the ingredients: Almonds, Evaporated Cane Juice, Palm Fruit Oil, Sea Salt.

I can see this being the kind of almond butter that kids would love. You can see the almond butter sample in the pic above. And Barney Butter is so cool… they have “Team Barney Butter” events like triathlons! Check out their site: www.barneybutter.com

Have you tried this almond butter? What are your thoughts? What is your favorite nut butter?

Too Much Omega-3?

Can you have too much Omega-3? Hmmm… if so then I OD’d on it today. Feeling great though, so it can’t be too bad!

Green Monster Day 2

Green Monster Day 2

Hello! Another Green Monster smoothie morning along with some joe (I promise that tomorrow will be something different!).

Do you take any Omega-3 supplements? I came across these Coromega Squeeze Packs at the Vitamin Shoppe. Just bought one of the Go Paks to try (they are 99ยข for one! yikes!), but at least it comes with a $1 off coupon inside, so if I buy the bigger box (the 30 count package is around $20), it could be used towards that. From their website: “…clinically proven 300% better absorption than regular soft gels.” I’m intrigued. Orange flavored goo in a pack, that is better than pills? Sure I’ll try it!

Coromega Go-Pack

Coromega Go-Pack

Not going to lie here… this was not the best tasting thing. Not horrible, but definitely not as yummy orange as I was anticipating. Luckily it is only about a teaspoon size serving… you wouldn’t want anymore than that at one time. They have several other flavors, that I might be willing to give a try. Omega-3 is good for the body, and I’m always looking for alternative ways to get it. Their package design is super cute (not this one, but the packaging they have on the site) and I LOVE the illustrations. Not sure who the artist is, but kudos to them!

Speaking of illustrations- check out this bar! How cute is that? When I grabbed this bar for my cooler this morning, I did not realize it was an Omega-3 bar and I just had my Coromega shot. So I surely got enough Omegas today! This bar is made by Fairlight Bakery out of Vancouver Washington (love Vancouver!) and made with Oregon berries! I am thinking HOOD RIVER STRAWBERRIES?! It doesn’t say, but the Hood River Valley has some amazing berries. This bar was more like a dense cookie… very different from the nut-date-fruit bars I’ve been eating lately. I don’t watch calories, but if you do, you might want to know it is 250 which is kind of high for a bar. I really liked this!!! The peanut butter & jelly is really subtle which I liked. It was not overly sweet or sugary, just pleasant. I am not sure if this is a brand new product, but saw it for the first time this week. It retails for $1.99 in my neck of the woods. Try it if you are looking for a bar that tastes like a cookie. ๐Ÿ™‚

Dinner was a Southwest Spaghetti Bake, made with Quinoa Linguine (so I guess it is a Southwest LINGUINE Bake). ๐Ÿ™‚

Cooked up some lean ground beef (you could sub ground turkey or veggie crumbles), green bell, mushrooms, onions & garlic. Then added a combo of spices- cumin, chili powder, oregano, s&p and tomato sauce. Tossed the noodles with 1 egg & some milk, and poured the meat/veggie/sauce mixture on top. Sprinkled a touch of cheese and baked for 10 minutes. Served with a spinach salad w/TJ’s Poppyseed dressing & a multigrain roll. Quick & easy. I don’t cook with ground beef often, but was craving it this week over the usual turkey.

The temps have been so cool here today, and with all the rain everything is so green. Debating if I want to do an Exercise TV workout tonight, or just jump right in the bath. Hmmm…

The Smoothie is Always Greener on the Other Side

My green monsters never look green. Well at least not as green as others I’ve seen. I guess the smoothie IS always greener on the other side. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Green Monster Smoothie

So my day started off with one of these babies. So refreshing!

Mid-morning I had a small container of that Greek Chickpea Salad from last night, with a few homemade pita chips.

No photo of lunch, because I am not too proud of it… it was a Butternut Squash Lean Cuisine. Hey I was in a hurry and it was better than fast food.

In the afternoon, I tried a new bar: Cascade Fresh Activ8 Blueberry Acai. I tried the Cherry Vanilla a few weeks back (yuck!), but this one was good. They are on sale at Jewel this week for 50ยข and are in the yogurt section. They are on the small side, but very dense and full of nuts. Not super filling, but for a light snack it works. Check out the ingredient list… it is pretty decent. And at this sale price, you can’t beat it.

Went on a 30 minute run, and came home to more homemade pizza from the hubby. Cheese & basil this time. Now I’m sipping a refreshing Synergy! Strawberry & Grape are my favorite flavors. It is more fun to sip it from a wine glass. ๐Ÿ™‚

Pretty low-key evening. Oh, it was clean sheet night. I heart clean sheet night… bed time always feels so much better!

L’Eiffel Bistrot – A.K.A. The Craperie

Today my love & I went to L’Eiffel Bistro & Creperie CRAPerie.

(Let me first say that my morning started out with a bowl of GDW Spicy Oats, followed several hours later by a banana with Dark Chocolate Dreams. Yum.)

Banana with Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Goodness

Then we embarked on what should have been a romantic & tasty lunch. When we walked in, we were impressed with the overall art deco, cozy ambiance. However, the flighty hostess was not a good first impression. It took her several minutes to decide where to seat us, and she seemed flustered and scatterbrained. Our waiter seemed nice, but we had to wait 10 minutes for him to even come over to say hello. We ordered our meals, and then waited another 45 minutes (with just water), waiting for the appetizer! Meanwhile, every table that came in AFTER us was happily enjoying their meals. The caramelized onion & olive tart finally came and was good.

But then another 15 minutes passed. The huge round table party with the screaming kids that came in WAY after us were already done eating at this point, and I was ready to start gnawing on the tablecloth. Finally, it arrived.

LEiffel La Panagol Crepe

L'Eiffel La Panagol Crepe

Looks pretty, right? The salad was simple and good, but the crepe was just okay. Lacking in flavor, and as soon as I cut into it, greasy oils poured out! I really should have taken a picture of this grossness. My plate was swimming in an oily residue. I ate it because I was hungry, and in no mood to complain or wait even longer for something else.

Huge disappointment. I am sure some of their food is good (the tart was great), but waiting over an hour for an oily crepe? I think I’ll pass. A shame, because we wanted to go back and try them for dinner sometime. So many better places, it is not worth the time.

Dinner on the other hand was AWESOME, well because we made it. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Balsamic Grilled Pork Chops & Peaches from the most recent issue of Clean Eating magazine. See how yummy it looks?

Grilled Pork Chops & Peaches

I also made the Greek Salad that was in the same issue (chickpeas, feta, red onion, cucumber, tomato & toasted pita). I was great because we got to use some of the fresh rosemary from our garden for this meal! Hooray for fresh herbs!

Later we went out for 2 baby cones at the custard shop.

The word on my Grandpa, he will be at the hospital for the rest of the week. They operated and had to remove 2 toes. He had an infection in his foot, which would be minor for most people, but since he is diabetic it was slow to heal. That combined with bad circulation, caused him to get gangrene. Diabetes scares me, a lot of my family members have developed Type 2 due to excess weight & lack of activity. That is even more the reason for me to strive to eat well & be active and try to lead by example. Some people are at a greater disposition to develop it, (and Type 1 is a whole different story), but for the most part you can prevent, or at least slow, Type 2 by the choices you make. I know this is not the case with everybody, I’ve known healthy thin people with it, too. Any readers with diabetes? How does it affect your life?

Runner’s Gait Analysis

Has anyone have this done? I woke up early this morning to have my gait analyzed. It was much different than I expected.

First, he had me take off my shoes & socks, and do a 30-point inspection of my lower body (felt like I was a used car getting inspected, ha!). Doing various things like a squat, contracting my quads, feeling my knee caps, measuring my arch, etc. Then I had to lay on a table and do some stretches to test flexibility and such. After that, he used black electrical tape to stick on my knees and the backs of my shoes. This was the video part, I was basically videotaped running from all angles for about 4 minutes. I never run on treadmills (only outdoors!), so it felt really awkward for me. It felt like the belt was loose, and kept drifting to the side.

I go back next week to go over the results. He did say me left leg was different (weaker) than my right, which explains why I sometimes have pain in that knee. It will be interesting to see, and maybe help with purchasing better shoes that are more fitted to my body mechanics. For only $14 thought it was worth it to try, and see what the “experts” have to say.

After the analysis, I went on a nice 30 minute run. This week I am increasing my runs slightly, so it was more challenging and worked up a nice sweat. Right after, it started raining.

Relaxed for a bit with a chocolate whey & almond milk combo, showered, then met up with the hubby for lunch. Not a lot of healthy options at this place, but did manage to get a chicken & black bean burrito with a salad & baked beans. Later I ate 3 cookies.

Dinner was Amy’s Roasted Veggie Pizza, then we went to the grocery store (finally!) and stocked up, got Starbucks (tall coffee in a grande cup), mowed the grass, and now just enjoying a low-key evening. I’ve been pretty sluggish today, which might be from the beer from last night’s party. I rarely drink beer, or only have 1, so this was a little more than usual.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a higher energy day! It is so chilly now, in the fifties! It feels pretty nice and refreshing! ๐Ÿ™‚

Very excited to learn the results of my gait analysis, and would love to hear if anybody else has had this done!

A Buffalo Kind of Day

The morning weather was gorgeous here!

Allison & I share a mutual friend, Frank. When I saw her infamous “Spicy Oats”, I had one of those why didn’t I think of that moments. Although not a fan of fake meat products that are processed and contain soy, there is a box of leftover Morningstar Farms Veggie Patties in the freezer, and hey I gotta use them up! This is a very filling breakfast! (Can you see that I even used a Tabasco mug? ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Green Dog Spicy Oats

After breakfast, the hubby left some coffee for me so I enjoyed a cup with a dab of Half & Half, and half a packet of Truvia.

Wanted to get in a quick workout to get the blood flowing, and tried Exercise T.V.’s “Upper Body Stretch” by Jillian Michaels (under the 10 minute workout section). What a joke! It was only 2 minutes long, and the rest was an advertisement for her DVD. Blah. Next, I tried “Explosive Upper Body” by Patrick Murphy. This was also under the 10 minute section, but was really 23. It had some fun warm-ups that involved balance. The power push-ups (pushing off so your hands are off the ground) were hard! I need to work on that. I would do Patrick’s workout again.

(Warning: more beige food with red stuff on top ahead.)

Mid-Morning Snack

Mid-Morning Snack

We desperately need to go to the market for groceries, so it was slim pickings for a mid-morning snack. So I heated up half of a leftover chicken breast (chicken dipped in Frank’s Buffalo Sauce, breaded with Panko & baked at 350 degrees, topped with more Buffalo Sauce), and the bottom-of-the-bag crumbs from Food Should Taste Good’s Buffalo Chips. I have to be honest, these chips are not nearly as good as their Sweet Potato Chips. I did not get the buffalo taste at all. Pretty disappointing, especially since I love buffalo!

Lunch! Leftover Stuff I Found in the Fridge.

Lunch! Leftover Stuff I Found in the Fridge.

Lunch was the other half of the buffalo panko chicken & a tiny dollop of mashed potatoes (all that was left). It was such a small portion, that I needed something else to fill me up. I found an Amy’s Cheese Pizza Pocket in the freezer, and heated that up. It sort of exploded in the microwave and the sauce oozed out so it looks sloppy. I really like the taste of the dough in this. Everything was topped with a few shakes of aleppo pepper.

Clouds & Roses

Clouds & Roses

Later in the day, I went outside to read my June/July issue of Clean Eating magazine. Such great recipes! Can’t wait to make the orange chia pops!!! While basking in the sun, watching blue jays, I had a Greens+ Yogurt Bar and a “jonic”??? Since quitting soda (will talk about that in another post), I sometimes mix 1 part juice with 3 parts seltzer to make a jeltzer! However, we are out of seltzer water, so instead tried this with diet tonic water. The verdict is still out… having a hard time liking tonic water. Luckily it was the last bottle in the fridge, probably won’t buy more. What do you think of tonic water?

Greens+

Greens+

Later, we went to a BBQ party to celebrate the start of summer, which was all catered. Had a chicken sandwich with a dollop of barbeque sauce, coleslaw, broccoli salad, cajun potato salad (not healthy AT ALL, but tasty in moderation) & strawberries & pineapple. They also had a keg. ๐Ÿ™‚ No pics of the party food… I did not know these people that well (hubby’s co-workers) and didn’t want to make a scene photographing food. ๐Ÿ™‚

We had a nice bonfire back at home with some coffee. A sweet end to a beautiful day. That changed though when I found out that Grandpa is in the hospital. Nothing too serious, but he will have to be there a few days and it is always scary when loved ones are in the hospital. Mom is staying the night with him, so I know he is in good hands. There is not much that I can do right now, except to send positive thoughts that he’ll be okay.
